Before it was called Kosugi, this font shipped on Android as MotoyaLCedar W3 mono. The cedar in that name stays in the design story: MOTOYA wanted the strokes to recall Japanese cedars, the kind with straight, thick trunks and branches, and you can see it in how upright and even the kana are, with very little contrast anywhere.
It is a Gothic, the Japanese term for a sans, built on a design from the 1950s. The metrics are monospaced, so columns line up without any effort from you. Western text pays for that. A narrow i or l gets the same slot as an m, and a sentence of English comes out wide and gappy.
7,526 characters cover Japanese with kana and kanji, plus Latin, Greek and Cyrillic, in 1 Regular weight.
Want softer corners? There is a rounded version, Kosugi Maru.
