Sofia Sans was first drawn for a city, the Bulgarian capital it is named after, and a typeface for a city has to work at any size and in more than 1 alphabet. That brief explains most of what you find in it.
Botio Nikoltchev and Ani Petrova of lettersoup went back to the technical sans serifs of the early 1900s for the skeleton, the kind with tense curves and a strong upward pull in every letter, and then softened it. Some details lean humanist, and the corners are rounded slightly, the way a metal type letter printed into paper never had a perfectly sharp angle. The proportions are narrow and the x-height is generous, so a lot of readable text fits in a short line.
This page has the Normal width, 18 styles from Thin to Black, every weight with its italic. (The full system runs to 4 widths, down to Extra Condensed.) Greek and Cyrillic come in every style next to Latin with its extended accents, and Google added the family in November 2022.
The OpenType side is deep:
- small caps, and caps to small caps for acronyms
- tabular and proportional figures, fractions, subscripts and superscripts
- case sensitive forms, contextual alternates, discretionary ligatures
- 2 stylistic sets
The designers also mention arrows and circled numerals in the character set, which a wayfinding job will use.
Regular at 16 px makes a good reading size. We would keep the Thin for headings large enough that its stroke reads as deliberate, 48 px or more.
