Google Sans used to be proprietary, kept inside Google’s own products. Gmail showed it, while elsewhere people got Roboto or whatever font the device had, and the look of the whole ecosystem split. In 2025 Google released both Google Sans and this variable sibling, Flex, to the public, so outside developers could build with the same type.
Flex is the adjustable one. Its axes cover weight, width, optical size, slant and roundedness, so 1 font file can stand in for dozens of styles, tuned to a product or a mood. Font Bureau and Pathfinders, both specialists in variable fonts, worked on it with Google. The optical size axis reshapes letters automatically to stay legible from a smartwatch face up to a billboard, and that work won a Red Dot Award in 2024.
Google also tested styles on more than 3,000 readers and reports that taller, more elegant styles came across as more premium and engaging. Take that as their finding, but it explains why the family leans so hard on adjustability.
