OpenDyslexic has shipped on the Kindle Paperwhite and on Kobo e-readers, has been in Instapaper since 2012 and is a font option on Wikipedia under some skins, which is a long reach for a typeface 1 person put out in 2011. Abbie Gonzalez made it, and the project’s site describes it as designed against some common symptoms of dyslexia, a careful wording.
The research has been less generous. In a 2013 eye-tracking study by Rello and Baeza-Yates, Spanish readers with dyslexia read no faster in it and their fixations got no shorter. Broadbent’s 2023 study found no difference in test scores, although most participants who had a preference chose OpenDyslexic. Some readers find it comfortable, and the evidence goes about that far. Wikipedia’s article says plainly that it is no cure.
It is a very wide face, taking about 78% more room on a line than Arial does, so plan a layout around it from the start.
The OpenType set is fuller than you might guess for an accessibility font: old style and lining figures, tabular and proportional spacing for them, fractions, superscripts and subscripts, discretionary ligatures and 2 stylistic sets, plus Greek, Cyrillic and Vietnamese. Regular, Italic, Bold and Bold Italic, built in Glyphs.
