About 45 million people read the Kannada script in southern India, and it carries more than the Kannada language: Konkani, Tulu, Badaga, Kudiya and Paniya are written in it too. It is an abugida, so vowels attach to consonants as signs, and some letters wear a partial headstroke. A relative of Telugu, if you know that script.

Google’s Noto collection covers it with a plain, unmodulated sans. Jelle Bosma is credited with the Monotype design team, and the full family has several widths as well as weights, with characters drawn from 5 Unicode blocks, Vedic Extensions and some Devanagari among them.

The download on this page has the normal width in 9 weights, Thin to Black, with Latin and its extended accents in each file so that a brand name or a web address in a Kannada paragraph does not need another font. Shaping happens through glyph composition and localized forms, so the app has to support complex scripts.

For a news site in Kannada we would set the text in Regular and headings in Semi Bold. Keep Black for large sizes, since the small enclosed loops of the script close up when strokes get that heavy.
