Questrial’s character set reaches well past Western Europe. There is African Latin, with ɛ, ɔ and ŋ, the hooked letters and the vowels with a dot below, and next to it full Vietnamese and the Central and South-Eastern European languages, 971 characters in all.
The drawing itself came from Joe Prince and Laura Meseguer, and it reached Google in 2011. The family notes point to Swiss design and the grotesk tradition as the influence, though many of its curves are drawn as full circles, which to our eye pulls it toward the geometric side and leaves a line of text looking airy.
Only 1 weight exists, Regular. The figures are tabular by default, so a column of prices lines up without extra work, and small caps, fractions, ordinals and a slashed zero are there if you go looking. We would keep it to headings, navigation and short paragraphs on the web. A long article in a single weight has nowhere to go for emphasis.
