Aadarsh Rajan drew the Tamil for Mukta Malar, and the family credits put him next to Girish Dalvi and Yashodeep Gholap, who drew the original Mukta. Malar is the Tamil branch of that project.
Mukta came out of Ek Type in Mumbai with a stubborn aim, 1 family for each Indian script and all of them in harmony, with no script’s habits pushed onto the others. A Tamil page with English in it should not look like 2 fonts that met in the layout. The strokes are monolinear, the same thickness all the way round, and the structure is humanist.
7 weights, from ExtraLight at 200 to ExtraBold at 800, no italics. The font is well stocked beyond the letters: small caps, old style and tabular figures, fractions, superscripts and subscripts, and 5 stylistic sets. A Tamil annual report with numbers in the tables would find all of that useful.
