The word anek points to multiplicity, and the project took it literally: 10 scripts, a range of weights and widths, and 12 designers spread over 8 Indian cities, most of the work done during lockdown.

Ek Type ran it from Mumbai. 10 people took 1 script each, the script most familiar to them, while Noopur Datye handled project management and Girish Dalvi the font engineering.

The Gujarati here is Mrunmayee Ghaisas’s work, with Yesha Goshar’s Latin beside it. The scripts have common traits, set down before drawing began, and each also draws on its own typographic culture.

This download has 8 weights, Thin to Extra Bold, with tabular figures, a slashed zero, and both the Gujarati rupee sign ૱ and the Indian ₹ for prices. The boldest weights are where Ek Type sees the design at its liveliest, sharp terminals and tapered joins included, so a Gujarati masthead or wordmark is a good place to start.
