Sofia Sans started as a typeface for Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria, and Botio Nikoltchev and Ani Petrova of the studio Lettersoup then grew it into a system of 4 widths: Normal, SemiCondensed, Condensed and ExtraCondensed. This is the Condensed, and next to Arial it sets about a quarter narrower.
Its models are the technical sans serifs of the early 20th century, with their upright stance and tightly wound curves. On top of that the designers put humanist details and softly rounded corners, which they say recall print from hot metal typesetting. We think that softness helps most at text sizes, where condensed faces can turn harsh.
The x-height is generous, and the family covers Latin, Greek and Cyrillic with a lot of extra furniture:
- small caps, plus a feature to make them from capitals
- tabular and proportional figures, fractions, superscripts
- arrows and numbers in circles
- 2 stylistic sets
9 weights from Thin to Black, every one with an italic, 18 files. For a timetable, a sports results page or anything with long words in narrow columns we would pick Medium or Semi Bold and leave the Thin to posters.
