Argentum Sans

Start with the lowercase l. In Argentum Sans it has a tail, pulled from Montserrat’s alternates and made the default, and it was 1 of the first things Cristiano Sobral changed when he forked Montserrat 5.001. He began the project, Latin for silver in its name, as a response to the weight changes the upstream fonts went through in 2017.

The changelog since then reads like a long list of small corrections. The G got a crossbar, taken from the Montserrat-G project. The Q lost its curl for a straight tail. Tabular figures became the default, kerning was adapted to them, and in the italic the G was redrawn to feel properly italic while e and f were given true italic forms. Cyrillic is covered too, with local forms for Bulgarian, Serbian and Macedonian.

Montserrat itself goes back to 2010, when Julieta Ulanovsky started it as a post-graduate type design student at FADU, University of Buenos Aires, so the silver in the name has a certain logic.

9 weights, Thin to Black, every one with an italic, and 1,100 characters per style with Greek and Vietnamese. There are 6 stylistic sets, old style figures, fractions and superscript and subscript figures. Because the figures are tabular out of the box, it suits price lists and tables well; for running text we would switch on proportional figures.
