Telex came first, a Latin sans serif for text, and Sarala is what Andrés Torresi and Carolina Giovagnoli built on top of it to cover Devanagari for HT Fonts. The aim was a web font that reads well at ordinary text sizes.
Its shapes began as grid fitting forms for the screen. Over the course of the project it grew into a more general humanist sans with low contrast and open counters. The proportions are wide too, and that openness is what keeps a dense Hindi paragraph from clogging up at 16 px.
There are 2 weights, Regular and Bold, and 555 characters that hold Devanagari alongside Latin with its extended accents. José Nicolás Silva, Vaishnavi Murthy and Erin McLaughlin are thanked in the project notes for their feedback on the design.
Should you use it for display? The Bold will do for a heading. For a news site or an app that switches between Hindi and English we would pick it without much hesitation.
