Lagos Design Week starts Monday
The wordmark for Festac ’77, 1 of the landmark festivals of Africa’s post-colonial years, had 6 lowercase letters, a pair of single quotes and a 7. That is all the Afrotype team had to start from, and Tac One is what they grew out of it: a full bold sans, with the extra letters and accents needed for every African language commonly written in Latin script.
It is Afrotype’s second project. The credits list Seyi Olusanya, Eyiyemi Adegbite, David Udoh and Mirko Velimirović, and Google added it in February 2024. This page has the project’s initial release, a single heavy style.
Inside the 1 style there is plenty. 966 characters, Vietnamese as well, math and symbol sets, 3 stylistic sets, a slashed zero, figures in old style and lining forms with tabular and proportional spacing.
The letters are compact for their point size, both short and narrow, so set it a step larger than you would expect. A festival poster seems the obvious place.
