Quattro has 4 widths of letter, where its sibling Duo has 2 and iA Writer Mono has 1. That count is the whole idea of the font.
iA Writer, the writing app from Information Architects, began with a single typeface, Nitti by Bold Monday. In 2017 iA added Duo, built on IBM Plex, a duospaced face that gives the W and the M a little more room, and in December 2018 Quattro followed. With 4 widths it comes close to a proportional typeface, but iA kept some typewriter habits on purpose. Word gaps stay wide and the punctuation stays monospaced. Letters get more room than a fully proportional face would give them. iA also points out that it saves space on a small screen.
At the same release iA redrew all 3 fonts to pull them away from Plex and the look of IBM’s brand, and gave the trio 1 shared character.
It runs about 21% wider than Arial, and that is the feel of it in a draft, airy and unhurried, with words that do not crowd. 5 stylistic sets of alternates and a slashed zero are in all 4 styles, and the character set goes past Latin into Greek, Cyrillic and Vietnamese.
For a first draft of anything long we think it is easier on the eyes than a true mono, and less formal than a book face.
