Telugu has no headstroke, so its letters stand apart on the line with no bar along the top to tie them. Around 74 million people speak the language, the state language of Andhra Pradesh, and the script, in use since about 1300, is a close relative of Kannada. It also writes Sanskrit, Gondi, Chenchu, Savara and Manna-Dora, and it needs complex shaping in software.
Jelle Bosma drew this Noto version with the Monotype design team. There are 9 weights from Thin to Black, a Latin set alongside, and a handful of Devanagari characters. Google lists Lambadi and Waddar among its languages too.
Skip Thin and Extra Light for body text on a phone, where fine strokes will struggle. A news site would run well on Regular, with Bold for the headlines.
