King Njoya of the Bamum, in Cameroon, set the work going at the end of the 19th century, and the script was developed communally from there. It started out logographic, a sign for a word, and later turned into a syllabary.
Use of it declined from the 1930s on. Now it is being revived, and about 400,000 people are counted as users.
The Noto font covers both Unicode blocks for the script, the main Bamum block and the Bamum Supplement, more than 600 characters in all. Regular, Medium, Semi Bold and Bold are all there, with a Latin set. For a school primer, Regular carries the lessons and Bold the headings.
