Ancizar Sans

A university commissioned this one for itself. In 2014 Universidad Nacional de Colombia, the largest public university in the country, wanted its institutional image to hang on a typeface of its own, and Professor César Puertas of the Faculty of Arts in Bogotá drew it with Viviana Monsalve and Julián Moncada. For 10 years UNAL Ancízar stayed in house. In 2024 the university opened it up, presenting it as a gift from the institution to everyone else.

The family has a serif half and a sans half, and they split the work: the serif for essays and articles, this sans for signage and headlines. Both share 1 underlying structure, so a poster and the report behind it look related.

What you get on this page:

• 9 weights, Thin to Black, each with an italic, so 18 files
• small caps
• old style and lining figures, tabular or proportional
• monotonic Greek and the International Phonetic Alphabet next to Western Latin

That IPA support is the unusual bit. A linguistics department can set phonetic transcription in the same face as the rest of the page.

The italic is narrower than the roman, by around 10% over a line, and we would keep it for emphasis inside text. Many hands helped refine the fonts after 2014, Julián Prieto, José Castro, Mariel Hernández, Felipe Aragón, Sara Alarcón and Raúl Aponte among them.
