Jeremy Tribby named Barlow after John Perry Barlow, the songwriter and activist who co-founded the Electronic Frontier Foundation. The look of it comes from somewhere else, the public lettering of California: the state’s car plates, the highway signs, the sides of buses and trains.
On a grotesk frame the strokes stay low in contrast and the corners are rounded off a little. The Condensed is the tightest of 3 widths, narrow enough for a schedule board, a stats panel in a dashboard or a poster headline that has to be big and still fit.

The spacing was set with LS Cadencer, a tool Lukas Schneider of Revolver Type gave to the project. Tribby works in San Francisco.
