Tifinagh as written for the Tamahaq, Tamashek and Tawallamat languages uses bi-consonant ligatures, 2 consonants fused into 1 shape, and Akatab forms them automatically. SIL International built it with OpenType, and with Graphite too for software that supports it.
People do not all write these letters the same way. Akatab carries variant forms for personal and regional preferences, reachable through 18 stylistic sets, so a text can follow the habits of a particular community.
The Latin comes from Adobe’s Source family, which gives it a clean partner for transliteration and translation. There are 6 weights, Regular, Medium, Semi Bold, Bold, Extra Bold and Black. SIL’s documentation lists the Unicode ranges and explains how to call up each feature, and anyone producing reading primers should start there.
