In 2021 the Radio-Canada font went from covering 106 Latin languages to 317. Then in 2023 Jacques Le Bailly, who works under the name Baron von Fonthausen, added support for Indigenous languages, which for the house face of a national broadcaster in Canada was overdue and welcome.
The typeface goes back to 2017. Charles Daoud, a designer and typographer in Montreal, drew it with the studio Coppers and Brasses and with Alexandre Saumier Demers, as 1 information font for every platform CBC/Radio-Canada runs, on air and online. It is a humanist sans with some sharp angles cut into its curves, and the x-height was set with screen legibility and accessibility standards in mind, so it holds up in running text and in the small type of an app.
A year after it launched it picked up 3 awards in the font design categories of Communication Arts Typography, the Applied Arts Design Annual and the Grand Prix Grafika.
The family here is 5 weights, Light to Bold, each with an italic. Look in the OpenType menu too, because there are 8 stylistic sets, tabular and proportional figures, fractions and superscripts. For a newsroom that is the useful part: election tables in tabular figures, then the story in proportional ones, all in 1 typeface. We would stop at Bold for headlines and not miss a Black.
