Sora means sky in Japanese. The family was commissioned for the Sora project, a decentralized autonomous economy meant to back projects that benefit society, and its developer, Soramitsu, is a Japanese technology company that works in blockchain and is known for building the first central bank digital currency.
Jonathan Barnbrook and Julián Moncada were asked to put that company’s spirit and history into letters. What they drew has hints of low-resolution, early-screen typography, but they made every decision for the crisp displays of today, so it does not come across as retro.
The practical part is the x-height. It is big, the counters are open, and the result stays clear in an app or on a web page at almost any size. We would use the Regular and Medium for interface text and buttons, Semi Bold for headings, and leave Thin and Extra Light for large numbers on a dashboard, where their lightness reads as calm.
8 weights in all, Thin to Extra Bold, with tabular figures, fractions, stylistic alternates and a stylistic set. Latin and Latin Extended.
