Studio notes from Poznań
Viktoriya Grabowska made Armata steady and strong, low in contrast, and then slipped in a few shapes you don’t expect, delicate gestures inside an otherwise sturdy text face. The x-height is tall and the letters set wide, which keeps it clear at small sizes, and Sorkin Type, which released it, says it works across a wide range of sizes.
Grabowska was born in Simferopol, Crimea, in 1988 and graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Poznań in 2010, then went on to run its type design studio with Krzysztof Kochnowicz. Later came Cyrillic work for Lineto, a place at Darden Studio in New York, and PhD research on an educational typeface for blind readers, Maria Theresia. Passero One, Fjord One, Capriola and Kavoon are hers on Google Fonts as well.
1 Regular, Latin only.
