ABeeZee was drawn for children who are learning to read. Anja Meiners, a Berlin designer who has spent years on type for young readers, kept the shapes open, simple and definite, so each letter is easy to recognize and copy.

The italic has a second job. Its forms hint at the movements of fluent, joined writing, a step toward the handwriting a child will eventually develop, and Meiners meant it to encourage kids to find a hand of their own. It is about as wide as the Regular, so switching between them in a lesson changes the feel without upsetting the layout.

Meiners finished the drawing in December 2011, and Andreas Eigendorf mastered the fonts for release in September 2012. 2 styles, Regular and Italic, covering Latin.
