Special Group, an advertising and design studio, turned 15 and celebrated with a typeface. Alistair McCready, who runs the studio Monolith in Auckland, built it with them, taking the rough, dogged gothic sans faces of the early 20th century as his starting point and reworking them for now.
The main Special Gothic is a variable family that slides in width and weight. This one is a fixed slice of it: the condensed end, in a single Regular, set narrow enough that a headline fits a good deal more letters per line than Arial would allow. There is a Special Gothic Expanded One at the other extreme.
For a narrow display face it is well equipped:
- tabular and proportional figures, fractions, super and subscripts
- discretionary ligatures and 1 stylistic set
Wei Huang helped with the font production. We would use it the way the old gothics were used, stacked tight in a poster headline, and pair it with the normal-width Special Gothic for the text underneath.
