The HTC Dream was the phone Dave Crossland had in mind. In 2009, studying for the MA in Typeface Design at the University of Reading, he drew Cantarell as a contemporary humanist sans for reading on screens, web pages on that small handset in particular.
He built it with open source software only, FontForge mostly. The project notes take the view that a typeface is a tool like any other, and they invite you to extend it with the glyphs your own writing system is missing.
The family is Regular and Bold, each with a slanted partner. Those were labeled Oblique until a metadata cleanup in October 2022 renamed them Italic, and you may still run into the old name in places. 388 characters, extended Latin.
Phones have moved on a long way since the Dream. We’d still use Cantarell for interface text and help pages. It arrived on Google Fonts in 2010.
