The name carries some history. A catamaran is a boat with 2 parallel hulls of equal size, and while Western boat builders came to the idea fairly late, the Dravidian people of South India have used it since time out of mind. A Tamil and Latin family with 2 scripts running side by side could hardly be called anything else.
Pria Ravichandran, a type designer from India, leads the project. The Tamil is monolinear, an even stroke with no contrast to speak of, and it was drawn alongside Palanquin, a Latin and Devanagari sans, so the 2 are close relatives.
9 text weights, Thin to Black. That is a deep range for a Tamil family, and the middle weights are where the reading happens. We would run long Tamil articles in Regular, push headings to Bold, and leave Thin and Black for large display lines, where the monoline Tamil looks clean and graphic. There are a couple of stylistic sets with alternates if a logo needs a different shape.
