Songs from the Hmong New Year

Read the line left to right, but each syllable inside it is written right to left. That is how Pahawh Hmong works, the syllabary Shong Lue created in 1959 for the Hmong language, which is spoken in China, Vietnam, Laos and Thailand. Hmong is also written in the Romanized Popular Alphabet devised by William Smalley, so the 2 systems live side by side.

Google’s Noto collection gives the script a plain, unmodulated design in 1 Regular style, with a Latin set alongside for the romanized text. Software with shaping support is needed to assemble the syllables properly.
