Circles run all through Madimi One, and they are there on purpose. Taurai Valerie Mtake and Mirko Velimirović started from the gentle, curved geometry of certain Southern African graphic symbols, and in KiNtu symbology the circle stands for a woman’s womb. Their aim was to carry the quiet subtext of what they spell Afrikan visual traditions into a Latin alphabet.
What came out is a rounded sans, part geometric and part organic, with soft edges and nothing fussy. 1 Regular, 345 characters covering Google’s Latin Core set, added to the library in February 2024.
With a single weight it wants a children’s book cover or a sticker sheet, set large enough for the round shapes to register.
