Kedebideri means “Let’s write!” in Zaghawa Beria, and the script it serves has only lately reached computers: Beria Erfe is now encoded in Unicode 17.0.
Its letters are built from a sampling of traditional animal brands, the marks found on livestock and on the rocks and caves of North Darfur and eastern Chad. A school teacher, Adam Tajir, first introduced the script, and Siddick Adam Issa developed it further.
SIL Global made the font, crediting SIL staff and an anonymous volunteer. There are 6 weights, Regular to Black, and a Latin set alongside, so a primer can carry Beria text and its translation in 1 family. For a script this young that is a generous start.
