Paula Scher at Pentagram commissioned the Red Hat fonts for the company’s new identity, and Jeremy Mickel of MCKL drew them. For starting points he looked at American sans serifs, Tempo and Highway Gothic among them.

The family comes in 2 optical sizes and a monospace. Display, this one, is the big-type half: low contrast, tight spacing, a large x-height and open counters. Red Hat Text has a smaller x-height, a narrower body, looser spacing and thinned joins so it holds up small, and the 2 are meant to be mixed on 1 page.

7 weights run from Light to Black, every one with an italic. In November 2024 the Medium and SemiBold were nudged to sit more evenly in the range, after enough people had reported the old steps felt off.

It was spaced tight for large sizes, so we would not set paragraphs in it; that is what Red Hat Text is for. On slide titles and a homepage headline, try Medium or SemiBold first, and save the Black for a word or 2 on a cover.
