Pentagram’s first request to Chester Jenkins was to rework Polaris Condensed, a typeface of his own, for the Cooper Hewitt museum. He ended up starting over. Jenkins has said he drew every letter from scratch and used the Polaris forms only as a rough guide to letter widths and the thickness of the main strokes.
The new face was part of a bigger change at the Smithsonian’s design museum in 2014, a new identity and a new name, with Eddie Opara of Pentagram on the identity. The museum describes the result as a contemporary sans serif built from modified-geometric curves and arches, and it put the UFO source files on GitHub for type designers who want to change it.
For a geometric sans it sets slightly narrower than Arial, which fits a face whose widths were guided by a condensed one.
The family runs from Thin at 100 up to 800, 7 weights, each with an italic. Tabular figures, superscripts and fractions are in, plus 1 stylistic set, and there are case-sensitive forms so brackets and dashes sit right between capitals.
We would use the Thin and Light only at display sizes, and let Regular and Medium do the reading on a web page or in a report.
