Morris Fuller Benton drew the original Franklin in 1912, and Libre Franklin is Impallari Type’s reading of Benton’s design, an interpretation more than a copy, and an expansion of it too.

Impallari Type is a foundry in Rosario, Argentina. Pablo Impallari led the project with Rodrigo Fuenzalida and Nhung Nguyen, and the expanded family has 9 weights from Thin to Black, every 1 with an italic, and Cyrillic and Vietnamese next to the Latin.

The italics are a useful detail. They take exactly the same width as the romans, so you can italicize a phrase in a news story and the line breaks stay where they were.

We would use the middle of the range for editorial work, Regular for body copy, Semi Bold or Bold for headlines, and save Black Italic for a loud kicker above a story. Google has carried the family since June 2016.
