Amsterdam shop lettering from the start of the 20th century gave Kufam its Latin capitals. The Latin lowercase came from somewhere much older and further away: the dark, condensed Kufi inscriptions of the 7th century, which are also the model for the Arabic.
Wael Morcos drew the Arabic and Artur Schmal the Latin. The family was first conceived in The Khatt Foundation’s Typographic Matchmaking in the City project, and Original Type published it.
Its purpose is information design, signage and wayfinding in particular, places where an Arabic line and an English line sit on the same panel and have to read as 1 system. There are 6 weights from Regular to Black, each with an italic, 12 styles in all.
The features list is long. Small caps, old style and lining figures, tabular figures, a slashed zero and contextual alternates are in there, the kit a sign system needs for platform numbers and room codes. Our view: the Black weight would read from a long way off, and the italics give a wayfinding scheme a second voice for notes and translations.
