Readex is short for “reading expanded”, and the question behind it was whether a typeface could make reading easier for the more than 400 million people who speak Arabic.
Dr. Nadine Chahine and Thomas Jockin set out to test that by taking the method Bonnie Shaver-Troup had built for Lexend, in Latin, and applying it to Arabic. In Lexend the idea is to cut visual noise: distinct letterforms, and the option to open up both the spacing between letters and the shapes themselves. The theory, known as the Shaver-Troup Formulation, was set out in a US patent application in 2003.
Google’s credit lists Shaver-Troup, Santiago Orozco and Héctor Gómez as well. The download is 6 weights from Extra Light to Bold, with a Latin that sits with the Arabic, Vietnamese included, a slashed zero, fractions and 3 stylistic sets.
For a bilingual app or a wayfinding sign in Arabic and English, it saves you the work of matching 2 unrelated families. Our advice is to be generous with line spacing on a mixed page, more than a Latin-only layout would want.
