Fresh dumplings, open till late
More than 100 people drew ZCOOL KuaiLe, most of them apprentices. A Chinese font needs thousands of characters, and this one has 7,053 characters, so the typographer Liu Bingke ran it as a training workshop. The work went in 3 stages:
- Liu set up the framework of the character shapes and the design standards.
- The apprentices built out the character set to those rules.
- Liu and designers from his workshop, Yang Kang and Wu Shaojie among them, went back over everything and adjusted it until the characters looked like 1 hand.
That last pass is the one you see. The strokes look cheerful, lettering a snack shop or a children’s app would put on its sign, and the Latin follows along with a big lowercase. It covers Simplified Chinese. 1 weight only, so headings and short lines, not pages.
