The notches cut into the joins of Open Sauce Sans are ink traps, and they are the thing that separates it from its 2 siblings. Alfredo Marco Pradil drew the Open Sauce fonts for Creative Sauce’s own type system. Sans has the traps and is meant for interfaces and display. One is a clean grotesque without them, for editorial work, and Two is the rounded member.
He wanted all 3 compact and easy to read small, on screens and in print. In Sans the traps open up the corners where strokes meet, and at small sizes that is where a heavy grotesque usually clogs.
7 weights run from Light 300 to Black 900, every one with an italic. The 371 characters stay with Latin, but the OpenType work is generous for a set that size: tabular and proportional figures, case-sensitive forms that lift punctuation for all-caps lines, fractions, ordinals, superscripts and standard ligatures.
Our choice for a dashboard or an app would be Regular and Medium with tabular figures switched on, so numbers in a column line up. Black we would save for a short brand line, where the traps become visible and turn into a detail of their own. Version 1.478.
