Ogham, the notched alphabet carved on early Irish stones, is in DejaVu Sans. So are Tifinagh, Lisu, N’Ko and Old Italic, which gives an idea of how far past Latin this project was willing to go.
It started from Bitstream Vera, a 2003 design that covered little beyond Western European Latin. Štěpán Roh began DejaVu in 2004 to give Vera a far wider character set without changing how it looked, and along the way the project absorbed several similar efforts, among them part of Tavmjong Bah’s Arev fonts, and the glyphs taken from Arev are still credited to him.
What version 2.37, the July 2016 release, covers:
- Latin with Vietnamese, Greek with polytonic accents, Cyrillic
- Armenian and Georgian, complete
- Hebrew, Arabic and Lao, which the project lists as not present in every style
- math symbols, arrows and Braille patterns
5 styles are on this page: ExtraLight, Book, Bold and the 2 obliques. The slanted styles keep the upright letterforms and lean them over, so they take exactly as much room as the roman. A Condensed version exists as a separate family.
It is a wide face with a big, open lowercase. Next to Arial it needs 14.8% more line for the same text, and in our view that generosity is the reason it still reads well on a cheap monitor at 10 px, and also why a print headline in it can look a little loose. We would pick it for screens and for documents that mix alphabets, and something tighter for a poster.
