The name is honest. Magnus Gaarde drew Basic as a low contrast text sans built from familiar shapes with a small twist here and there, slightly elegant in the foundry’s own words, and meant to work from small text sizes up to display.
Sorkin Type Co published it, and in August 2014 the character set was extended and the hinting improved, which brought it to 446 characters with extended Latin.
Only a Regular exists, no bold and no italic. That limits it to web copy and interface labels where nothing needs emphasis, and there it reads easily.
