The N in the name marks the newer JIS2004 glyph shapes, close to Adobe’s StdN set. NightFurySL2001 also made a JPS version that keeps the older JIS90 forms, but Google Fonts carries only this one, which matters if a client cares how certain kanji are drawn.
The roots are Chinese. WDXL Lubrifont, 滑油字 in Chinese, grew out of ZCOOL QingKe HuangYou, Zheng Qingke’s display face, which covered Simplified Chinese only. NightFurySL2001 extended it for Traditional Chinese, Taiwanese, Hakka and Cantonese, then cut this Japanese release covering JIS level 1 and level 2 kanji. The aim was a compact but friendly display face that could still handle day-to-day typesetting.
It is narrow, and a headline packs in more than you would guess. Over 13,000 glyphs, 4 stylistic sets, Latin, Greek and Cyrillic for the odd foreign word, all in 1 Regular.
