Vercel wanted a sans to stand beside its monospace, Geist Mono, and made Geist with Basement Studio. The brief came out of the company’s own principles, simplicity, minimalism and speed, with the Swiss design movement as the reference point. Google Fonts credits Andrés Briganti, Mateo Zaragoza, Guillermo Rauch, Evil Rabbit, José Rago and Facundo Santana.
It is geometric and clean. 9 weights, Thin at 100 to Black at 900, in Latin and Cyrillic, and the feature list runs long: 9 stylistic sets, tabular and proportional figures, fractions, sub and superscripts, case sensitive forms.
The designers picture it at large sizes, on headlines, logos and posters. We would add developer dashboards and documentation, where it can sit next to Geist Mono code blocks without a clash. Google Fonts added it in October 2024.
