J. Robert Atkinson founded the Braille Institute, and his name went on a typeface the year the institute turned 100. For the 2019 centennial the institute hired Applied Design Works to rebrand it, and Brad Scott and Elliott Scott went looking for a font that people with low vision could read with ease.
Nothing on the market met their goals, so they drew Atkinson Hyperlegible, and the first version won a Fast Company Innovation by Design award that year.
What Next changed
This reworked version reached Google Fonts in January 2025, credited to the Braille Institute, Applied Design Works, Elliott Scott, Megan Eiswerth and Letters from Sweden. It brings new weights, better kerning, refined curves, more symbols and wider language support. The skeleton is still a traditional grotesque, with distinctive, unambiguous shapes worked in wherever a character might be mistaken for another, and now and then a form you would not expect.
14 styles, Extra Light to Extra Bold with italics, and the italics hold exactly the width of the roman, so emphasis never reflows a line. Tabular figures, fractions and superscripts are in the kit.
For forms, medicine labels and signage, Regular and Medium are the weights we’d trust. Extra Light works against the whole point of the family when the reader has low vision.
