Cham is written by about 250,000 people in Vietnam and Cambodia, and most fonts on a computer have nothing for it at all. This face, part of Google’s Noto collection, gives the script an even, unmodulated stroke and pairs it with a plain Latin so the 2 can share a page.
The script is a Brahmic abugida that runs left to right. Vowel signs attach to consonants and sit around them, so the font leans on shaping in whatever software renders it, with contextual alternates and localized forms built into the file to help. In an old app or a bare text editor the marks can land in the wrong place. A current browser handles it.
There is a hard history on the Cambodian side. Most Cambodian Cham people died under the Khmer Rouge in the 1970s or were forced to switch to the Cambodian language.
9 weights run from Thin at 100 to Black at 900, no italics. For running text in a community newsletter we would stay at Regular or Medium, and keep the Black for a masthead.
