Arabic script descends from Nabataean, which itself came out of Aramaic. The Nabataeans wrote it right to left across northern Arabia and the southern Levant from the 2nd century BCE into the 4th century CE.
Noto’s version draws the 44 characters of the Unicode block in an even, unmodulated line, in 1 Regular style with Latin alongside, and it needs software with shaping support to set properly. Scholars transcribing inscriptions and museums labeling them are the people we picture using it.
