Gotu

The Devanagari in Gotu was written with a canted nib, the pen held at an angle the way a calligrapher would, and then Sarang Kulkarni and Kailash Malviya let the structures wander. The curves are fat and the loops big, and the letters do not always agree with each other on how a shape should be built. Ek Type, the Mumbai collective behind it, describes this as improvised, and it reads that way, in a good sense.

The Latin is a curious partner. It is a sans serif, but a modulated one, thick and thin like a pen stroke, carrying the same calligraphic stress as the Devanagari and a few small quirks of its own. Old style figures are available if the lining ones look too stiff beside it.

There is only a Regular. We would use it where a little ornament is welcome, a wedding card or the cover of a slim monograph, and keep it out of long reading.
