In 2006, manuscripts dated to around 1750 were discovered in Gunjala, a Gond village in the Indian state of Telangana, and the script they were written in shares the village’s name. Gunjala Gondi is an Indic abugida, written left to right, for the Gondi language, and it has been revived among the Gond people of northern Telangana, eastern Maharashtra, southeastern Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh. It has nothing to do with Masaram Gondi, a separate script created in 1918.
Ek Type designed this Noto version, which supports 94 characters across the Gunjala Gondi, Basic Latin and General Punctuation blocks. It comes in 4 weights, Regular to Bold, so a primer or a sign can have real headings. There are 2 stylistic sets and contextual alternates, and, as with other Indic scripts, the text needs software that handles complex shaping.
