How open should the mouth of a letter be? Onest lets you choose. Its designers, Dmitri Voloshin and Andrey Kudryavtsev, drew alternate sets of characters for closed and semi-closed apertures, and with the stylistic sets you can mix them as the job needs, so the same family can look a little tighter and more geometric, or looser and closer to a humanist grotesque, depending on what you switch on. That hybrid of the 2 grotesque traditions is the idea behind the whole design.
The pitch from its makers is reading on screens, apps and sites in particular, with letters that stay distinct at small sizes in buttons and menus. They are also fussy about diacritics, down to the difference between a cedilla and an ogonek, and the Central European accents are drawn with that care.
Latin and Cyrillic come in 9 weights, Thin at 100 to Black at 900, with tabular and proportional figures, ordinals and case-sensitive punctuation for all-caps labels. We would use the Light to Semi Bold range for interface text and keep Thin for large numerals on a dashboard, where its hairline strokes have room.
