IBM wanted its typeface to say something about the relationship between people and machines, a long-running IBM theme, and Plex is what Mike Abbink of IBM Brand Experience & Design drew with Bold Monday, the independent Dutch foundry. Google added the Sans in March 2018.
The result is a grotesque, neutral but friendly, inside a larger system of Sans, Sans Condensed, Serif and Mono, each meant to work alone or alongside the others. The Sans is the everyday member.
Then the italics, which IBM itself describes as unexpectedly expressive. They run a little narrower than the romans, so an italic phrase draws the eye without stretching the line.
This download has 14 styles, Thin to Bold, each with an italic. Bold at 700 is the ceiling, with no Black above it. The feature list is deep: 6 stylistic sets, old style and lining figures, a slashed zero for serial numbers and codes, and 891 characters across Latin, Greek, Cyrillic and Vietnamese.
We would give it a product interface or technical documentation, Regular at 16 px for the text, and save Thin for big display lines.
