Akaki Razmadze drew the Georgian letters, and the Monotype design team did the rest, as part of Google’s Noto collection, the project that aims at a font for every modern and ancient language. Here the job is Mkhedruli, the single case alphabet in which almost all Georgian is written today, for some 4.5 million users of Georgian and the other Kartvelian languages.
Single case, mostly. In the 1950s Akaki Shanidze tried to make the old Asomtavruli letters the capitals of Mkhedruli, and the idea never caught on. Mtavruli forms sit beside the ordinary letters here, so a heading in all caps is covered.
The strokes are unmodulated, with even thickness all round, and there are 9 weights from Thin to Black. With that range an interface can use Medium for buttons and Regular for body copy without switching family, and the Latin, Greek and Cyrillic extensions travel along with it.
