Christian Thalmann’s own advice is to load Ysabeau onto an e-reader, which tells you where his head was. He took the letter shapes of the Garamond line, their wide stride and their long ascenders and descenders, and redrew them as a clean sans with hardly any contrast in the strokes. Under those tall extenders the small letters stay short, as they do in Garamond.
This page carries Ysabeau Infant, 1 of the family’s versions, in 18 styles, 9 weights from Thin to Black and an italic for each. Those italics come out close to 7% narrower than the uprights, so a line of them moves faster and takes less room, handy for a caption or a side note.
The feature list is long for a sans. Small caps, including a caps-to-small-caps switch for acronyms, 6 stylistic sets, slashed zero, fractions, sub and superscripts. Latin, Greek, Cyrillic and Vietnamese are covered, 1,012 characters.
Would we set a novel in it? Yes, at a comfortable size. Thalmann names EB Garamond or Cormorant as serif companions that share its bones, and he also likes it blown up to fill a page, which is where we would try the Thin.
