Vernon Adams mashed together several old Stephenson Blake designs to make BenchNine, then rounded the corners a little, after the way ink spreads and bleeds on vernacular woodcut type. What came out is tall and very condensed; a line of it fills about 64% of the width Arial needs for the same words.
He pitched it at headlines. Light, Regular and Bold. Think of sports results in a narrow box, a long title in a small slot, a poster stacked with names.
