The first TASA Explorer, the 2023 one, had an x-height so large that its makers only meant it for display, with very little optical correction in it, a face for big sizes and that was all. When Weizhong Zhang went back to it in 2025 he brought the x-height down a little, smoothed the letters and loosened the spacing, and the project now offers the result for text as well as headlines.
It was drawn by the studio Local Remote for the Taiwan Space Agency’s rebrand, as the adventurous half of a pair with TASA Orbiter. Terminals are cut vertically and the corners come to sharp angles. There is also some contrast between thick and thin strokes, which a geometric sans usually goes without, and it keeps the round letters from going stiff.
Zhang is a Taipei designer whose work is mostly bilingual, Latin set against Hanzi, and perhaps that is why the redesign added the letters and accents for Taiwanese romanization, Tâi-lô and POJ, on top of the usual Latin set.
5 weights, Regular up to Extra Bold, no italics. We would keep it to headings and short blocks, since Explorer has kept enough of its display manners that a long article in it would get loud, but tabular figures, fractions and a slashed zero are in there when a poster has to carry numbers.
